Moving through rain at speed

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to make realistic rain effects using the ObjectParticle class when moving at high speed?

I have an rain node attached to the player with Emitter based turned off so the player moved through the particles, however there is no sensation of speed.

Have a look at this presentation for rendering snow/rain in flightsimulator. The core idea is to tilt the cone (or in your case maybe the particle system) in a speed-dependent manner to support the illusion of higher travelling speeds.

Not sure it will do for moving at high speed, but there's a rain effect in library/worlds/sfx/rain_drops. Maybe it'll give you something to experiment with.
