Terrain texture sizes

- All the 'size settings' (predefined drop downs) should not be limited.

- The import function of the masks should work in the way, that not ALL the layers need to be imported.

(maybe it is meant to be that way, because there is the checkbox, but unfortunately I didnt have any luck by importing just several layers .. the other masks simply disappeard).

b.w.

Agree. Very often I need to replace only one mask without touching others, which were manually modified.

Hi Werner,

Could you please be more specific about this suggestion or describe in more detailes your use case? There is a limitation because of the performance. Higher texure resolution can cause rendering stalls and other unwanted behaviours that we are trying to avoid.

As far as I know mask import should not import unchecked materials masks. I will try to reproduce this issue and report back.

Thanks!

Hello Silent,

performance etc. is understandable.

But if I want higher res, can I do that somehow?

The import did not work here in terms of selection. Could that PSD format be the issue?

Cheers.

Probably, I will check it too.

Could you please specify what textures resolutions are not enough? I'm afraid we can't increase the textures sizes to the higher values at all.

Thanks!

Returning to the import function - it seems that I can't reproduce this behavior with mask layers import.

Basically, my steps are:

  1. Create terrain;
  2. Create 4 different layers for this terrain;
  3. In import section:
    1. Disable all the Textures import checkboxes;
    2. Enable import masks checkbox; Set number of channels to 4;
    3. Set the mask path to the whole 4 channels to the single PSD file;
    4. Select Material 0 (channel R, for example) and Material 2 (channel B).
  4. Press Import (Coarse and refined are enabled).

And I'm getting only the 2 channels import (instead of 4).

What the expected results are you want to see in this process? Could you please give us more details?

Thanks!

Imagine second iteration. You have already 4 masks imported, you need to reimport only first layer (lets say we have manual changes in layer 3, so this must be preserved). If I select only first mask, it will be imported, but masks 2-4 will be imported too as empty. It would make sense to not replace existing masks, until I check these layers.

Typical use case is, that I prepare some terrain with for example 30 layers, do some manual changes/corrections and after some time I decide to redesign 2 layers. But currently I cant, because by reimporting these two layers I also empty rest of layers. And I cant import everything again, beacuse I have already lots of manual changes in other layers (for example two months of work).

Ok, now I get it.

Unfortuantely, it is impossible because of the mask blending algorithm. When you select the single channel for import it must be blended with others (but they are already blended with selected channel). There is no option to decompose the images back to the single channel and blend them again.

That's why after selecting only couple of channels it is strictly required to reimport whole amount of masks. This is general limitation and I'm afraid we have to design a new terrain system to implement this feature.

But I've added this suggestion to the TODO list anway. I believe it will be useful for the future releases and we can implement such functionality sooner or later.

Thank you for the desription.

This feature would be a huge help! Having to re-import a full set of 16 masks each time we change 1 is a huge time sink.

Hopefully this gets implemented soon.

I was thinking of two things:

a) the issue which already has been added to the BugTracker (the DT doesnt like to be highnres ...)

b) the coarse textures (now limited to 4K), but I dont know if that makes sense in general (for tests and some specializations maybe?)

Thx Werner
