Best Interior Lighting Practices

Brand new to Unigine.  Like all rendering systems there are pro's and con's, the good and the bad.  Trying to learn those here, can't expect to turn on the lights and add default Light Voxel and get great results!  (oh well...lol)...

Anyone have some highlights/points to steer me in the right direction?

Should I use emissive lights on surfaces or actual lights?
When using Light Voxel Volume, what are some typical things people use for setup?

Things I'm struggling with...
Emmisive lights cranked to 4 on intensity and yet the entire scene still feels very dark.
Ambient Occlustion (I think) is very strong, way overkill.

I've tried sizing my voxel box bigger and just to the edge of the room...I've tried checking the Render Internal...neither seemed to help.
I've tried cranking intensity of Voxel Volume up...it helps but still the contrast between light and dark is much greater than it should be IMO.

I know there can be some great looks from Unigine both in the demo's I've seen and Archviz work.  Just trying to learn the system so I can generate some good looking stuff too.

Thanks for any guidance.

Hello Trey,

Voxel Probe requires a number of try-outs before you get the desired result. There's no some kind of typical values or settings for light baking, each scene needs adjustments.

Here our artist team suggestions:

  • increase number of bounces - this will make dark areas brighter
  • try to make voxel size smaller, the smaller voxels result in a more precise light baking
  • you can bake emission, but using real light sources instead could give you a better result, at least you'll see the shadows before baking
  • if you want to bake emissive lights you could try to combine it with real light sources in the final setup for better-looking shadows and highlights

Thanks!
