Increase the scale and height of the Rotorwash Brownout effect

Hello,

We are trying to accentuate the rotorwash "brownout" effect based on user feedback, but we have hit the limits of the vfx_turbulence_flow_dust.node with all parameters maxed out.

Specifically, we are facing two limitations:

- The effect doesn't start soon enough during descent.

- The dust doesn't rise high enough to simulate a heavy brownout.

Since we cannot modify the internal behavior of this node ourselves, what is the best way to achieve a larger and more controllable effect? Is it possible to get a modified node with extended limits ?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Marilou,

This should be feasible. However, we currently do not have the team capacity to take on this type of task. Achieving a stronger effect may also require setting up a new particle system.

I believe we should be able to involve a technical artist in August to fine-tune the materials and configure the effect. Would that timeline work for you?

Thank you!

Hello Silent,

That works for us!

August is a good timeline. If we can have everything good to go by the end of September, that will be perfect for us. I am available to discuss what the effect should look like if more description is needed.

Thanks!

Hi Marilou,

Thanks for the update!

Two more questions: are currently on 2.21, right? And the second one: if you can provide us a bit more references (videos / photos) of what you are looking for -- that would be great!

Hi,

Yes currently on 2.21.

A short recap of the feedbacks we had :

  • Dynamic Approach: The fast approach leaves a massive trailing wake of dust. When the pilot brakes, the downwash throws a violent "bow wave" of dust forward, which the helicopter then flies directly into.
  • Early & High: The dust kick-up starts very early in the descent (way before touchdown) and billows violently upward, reaching higher than the rotors to swallow the aircraft.
  • Zero Visibility: The particle density must be extremely thick and opaque. It should create a complete blind spot where the pilot loses 100% of their visibility.

Here are some youtube videos that show a brownout :
